Most, but not all, of these eleven stories transpire in the American South. More than half take place in or around the fictional university town of Thera.

Other towns, cities and locations will be recognizable to the reader. All the stories involve people moving through personal crisis or conflict toward some resolution or vindication: a Vietnam veteran enters a house and discovers his lost past; a woman baptizes her long-time adversary in the Otilia river; a prize fighter defeats a nightmare; a successful middle-aged Atlanta bachelor meets his mother's old sea-going lover; and a dead guy is found in the sheriff's barn ....
